We propose a notion of conditional vector quantile function and a vector quantile regression. A conditional vector quantile function (CVQF) of a random vector Y , taking values in R given covariates Z = z, taking values in R, is a map u 7→ QY |Z(u, z), which is monotone, in the sense of being a gradient of a convex function, and such that given that vector U follows a reference non-atomic distribution FU , for instance uniform distribution on a unit cube in R, the random vector QY |Z(U, z) has the distribution of Y conditional on Z = z. Moreover, we have a strong representation, Y = QY |Z(U,Z) almost surely, for some version of U . The vector quantile regression (VQR) is a linear model for CVQF of Y given Z. Under correct specification, the notion produces strong representation, Y = β (U) f(Z), for f(Z) denoting a known set of transformations of Z, where u 7→ β(u)>f(Z) is a monotone map, the gradient of a convex function, and the quantile regression coefficients u 7→ β(u) have the interpretations analogous to that of the standard scalar quantile regression. As f(Z) becomes a richer class of transformations of Z, the model becomes nonparametric, as in series modelling. A key property of VQR is the embedding of the classical MongeKantorovich’s optimal transportation problem at its core as a special case. In the classical case, where Y is scalar, VQR reduces to a version of the classical QR, and CVQF reduces to the scalar conditional quantile function. Several applications to diverse problems such as multiple Engel curve estimation, and measurement of financial risk, are considered.

Consistency of kernel-based quantile regression

Quantile regression is used in many areas of applied research and business. Examples are actuarial, financial or biometrical applications. We show that a non-parametric generalization of quantile regression based on kernels shares with support vector machines the property of consistency to the Bayes risk. We further use this consistency to prove that the non-parametric generalization approximat...

Semiparametric Quantile Regression with High-dimensional Covariates.

This paper is concerned with quantile regression for a semiparametric regression model, in which both the conditional mean and conditional variance function of the response given the covariates admit a single-index structure. This semiparametric regression model enables us to reduce the dimension of the covariates and simultaneously retains the flexibility of nonparametric regression. Under mil...

Approximation Analysis of Learning Algorithms for Support Vector Regression and Quantile Regression

We study learning algorithms generated by regularization schemes in reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces associated with an -insensitive pinball loss. This loss function is motivated by the -insensitive loss for support vector regression and the pinball loss for quantile regression. Approximation analysis is conducted for these algorithms by means of a variance-expectation bound when a noise condi...

This paper studies vector quantile regression (VQR), which is a way to model the dependence of a random vector of interest with respect to a vector of explanatory variables so to capture the whole conditional distribution, and not only the conditional mean. The problem of vector quantile regression is formulated as an optimal transport problem subject to an additional mean-independence conditio...

Instrumental Variable Quantile Regression * †

Quantile regression is an increasingly important tool that estimates the conditional quantiles of a response Y given a vector of regressors D. It usefully generalizes Laplace’s median regression and can be used to measure the effect of covariates not only in the center of a distribution, but also in the upper and lower tails. For the linear quantile model defined by Y = D′γ(U) where D′γ(U) is s...
